Our environment is the Ojo Guareña Natural Monument, a karst complex among the largest in the world with more than 100 km of underground galleries, and the largest visitable cave in Spain, the “Palomera” Cave. (Las Merindades region, north of Burgos). Ojo Guareña is the most extensive group of caves in the Peninsula, of great speleological interest, with prehistoric sanctuaries inside and 190 animal taxa (115 terrestrial and 75 aquatic), of which there are 12 aquatic species and 4 terrestrial that are new to science.
The Monastery of Santa María del Rioseco is one of those magical places that is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. We are facing the ruins of an abandoned monastery next to a lush natural environment.
A place that has become very popular in recent years on its own merits. And, above all, thanks to the voluntary work of hundreds of people who with their hands have rescued from abandonment the impressive cloister of the monks, also the interior of the church, the Chapter House, the Cloister of the Hospedería and its main entrance.
